TALKING ON DEFENSE

Bookmark and Share

For that one moment, they get out of themselves and they get into the team.  In an article featured in ESPN The Magazine, Coach Mike Krzyzewski of the Duke Blue Devils Basketball Program talked about the importance of being loud.  One of the things that Coach K talks about that I’ve used with baseball and softball for years is defensively talking.  This is especially critical when you are not playing well, you need to talk more because when you don’t talk your thoughts stay internal and you lose the game inside your own head.

When you do talk to the shortstop or to the people in the outfield you get external.  The more external you are, the more into the game you are.  For those athletes that are very quiet, we’ve got to get them to talk.  And the more they talk, the better they are going to do because they will be playing externally and not in their own heads.

Attention to detail is a foundation for success in any program.  Discipline is important in any program. Togetherness and being selfless, putting ‘we’ over ‘me’ is important in any program.
